Thanks you so much for the wonderful ride Wednesday in the Tonto National Forest. The scenery was beautiful, Prince is an exceptional horse and I really enjoyed your expertise.

Our Guides

Windwalker guides are selected with great care. For one thing, they become part of the Windwalker family, so we choose unique individuals who are not only skilled in their particular craft, but also have artistic talents and unique backgrounds - our guides are often photographers, artists, writers, gourmet cooks, history and geology buffs and botanical and wildlife experts. Because our guides are true professionals who love what they do, their excitement and energy will spill over to you and your experience with them will be truly amazing.

Tosh Black (Wilderness Survival Guide) - New!

Tosh’s love for all things outdoors probably began the day he was born. His adoration culminated at the early age of eight when he became the youngest hiker ever to scale Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

He became a quick study from a nationally renowned survival expert who happened to be his neighbor.

He continued his education at the college level, focusing his studies on wildlife, western vegetation & range management. He earned his degree in Biology from Arizona State University.

His experience includes working as an Arizona State Park Ranger in Southern Arizona and in the famed Superstition Wilderness. He has been called upon several times to appear on television, giving an expert’s point-of-view on survival-related topics.

He spearheaded the outdoor survival program at one of the largest junior colleges in the Nation. He has been teaching at the community college level for over ten years. Besides teaching hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing, he instructs an outdoor survival class utilizing ancient Native American skills. Additionally, he has been an Arizona state certified EMT for over 14 years.

His vast knowledge & experience, combined with his upbeat and infectious personality, ensure your expedition will be a cherished adventure for life.

Milton Joseph (Lead Horseback Guide, Specializes in English Endurance Expeditons)

Expert horseman and artist, Milton Joseph, rides both Western and English, but his true love is in endurance riding. The "Extreme" Pony Express Ride with Joseph is a truly amazing experience! He says he would spend his entire life on horseback if his art studio didn't keep calling him back.

Jack McAward (Off-Road Guide and Professional Photographer)

Jack's camera experience began the moment he was born. His father was a successful advertising agency owner in Manhattan and taught Jack everything he knew about cameras, advertising and public relations. Jack went on to get his degree in broadcast production and now owns an advertising agency and production studio. As an award-winning photographer, Jack's skills are much sought after. He's conducted workshops for Arizona Highways for nine years and been with Windwalker doing photography workshops and adventures since its inception. Jack says, "Photography is both a hobby and profession for me, so it's still as fun today as it was the day I picked up my first camera."

Dan Cotton (Off-Road Guide and Professional Photographer)

Dan started his love of photography at age 20. He was serving in the Air Force stationed with the Army in Korea when he bought his first camera. It was love at first sight. Once he completed his military service, he came back home and attended the Ohio State University and spent the bulk of his college career in the dark room. Dan has 30 years of experience as a professional photographer and has taught adult photography classes for 12 years. One of the most exciting phases of his career was as a photographer for the big advertising agencies in Chicago. But his love of the city life has shifted to a love of the desert and capturing the beauty of the southwest. Dan says he has the most fun with, "surrealism and photography and the merger of the two" in the art he creates.

Gil Gustavsen (Off-Road Guide and Professional Photographer)

Gil's father was an excellent amateur photographer and Gil spent nearly six years in his father's darkroom before he ever even received his first camera. Gil actually began his working career creating custom furniture for hotels and motels. Then he and his wife stopped by the Sonoran Desert Museum one day to take some photos. He fell in love and decided to become a professional photographer. He is currently working on a series of photographs and a story documenting Range Creek Ranch - the ranch was donated by its owner to the government in the hopes of preserving an entire canyon full of Fremont Native American sites. He loves taking photos that help preserve the history of the American West and is extremely knowledgeable about the Native American sites in Arizona, as well as about the Sonoran Desert.

Marilyn Schrab (Hiking Guide)

Marilyn has been hiking, trail riding and camping in Arizona most of her life. She is a Puma Level Trail Ranger/Volunteer at Pinnacle Peak Park. The park offers classes pertaining to fauna, flora and history of the area. Marilyn is also a Preserve Steward/Docent for the Desert Foot Hills Land Trust, which gave her extensive training in the history, flora and fauna of Arizona. As a charter member of Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona, she works with public and private land managers to help create sustainable trails, provide habitat restoration, help eradicate invasive species, and maintain park facility structures. She has recently completed training in the Arizona Site Steward Program which monitors archaeological resources.

Michele Lynn (General Manager, Gourmet Cook and Pack Trip Organizer)

Michele (Shelly) Lynn is the heart and soul of Windwalker. We all swear the whole organization would fall apart if Shelly wasn't there. She is an outstanding organizer, gourmet cook and office manager. And with her extensive experience in the wilderness, Shelly also acts as hiking guide, horseback riding guide and camp organizer. A true Jack-of-all-Trades, she is most likely the great voice you will hear on the phone when you call Windwalker to book an adventure.
